How to use the WebP to PNG tool

  1. Select the WebP files or drop them onto the box. You can convert up to 20 at once.
  2. Each image is converted to PNG straight away. Transparent backgrounds are kept.
  3. Download each PNG, or click Download all as ZIP.

What is WebP?

WebP is an image format developed by Google to make websites faster. It produces files around 25–35% smaller than JPG at similar quality, supports transparency like PNG, and is used by many large websites. That is why images you save from the web increasingly arrive as .webp files.

The downside is compatibility. Plenty of software and services still cannot open WebP, which is when converting to PNG helps.

When to choose PNG

Convert WebP to PNG when:

  • The image has a transparent background, such as a logo, icon or product cut-out.
  • You want to edit the image further. PNG is lossless, so repeated saves do not degrade it.
  • The image contains text, line art or screenshots, where JPG compression can create fuzzy edges.
  • A program or upload form accepts PNG but not WebP.

If the image is an ordinary photo and you just need it to open everywhere, WebP to JPG produces a much smaller file.

How to save a web image as PNG directly

Some browsers let you right-click an image and choose “Save image as”, but they keep the WebP format. Save the file, then drop it here to get a PNG in seconds. Because the conversion runs on your device, it is just as fast for 20 images as for one.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I open WebP files?

WebP is a newer format created by Google. All current browsers support it, but some older image editors, Windows Photo Viewer, older versions of Microsoft Office and many upload forms do not. PNG works with all of them.

Does WebP to PNG keep transparency?

Yes. PNG supports transparency just like WebP, so logos, stickers and cut-out images keep their transparent background.

Why is the PNG so much bigger than the WebP?

PNG is lossless: it stores every pixel exactly. WebP is designed to be compact. A larger file is normal and means nothing was lost in the conversion. If you need a smaller file and do not need transparency, use WebP to JPG instead.

Is there any quality loss?

No further quality is lost. The PNG is an exact copy of what the WebP image contains. If the WebP was saved with lossy compression, that earlier loss stays, but nothing new is removed.

Can I convert animated WebP files?

Only the first frame is converted, because PNG holds a single still image.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Conversion happens inside your browser, and your files never leave your device.
