How to use the Compress Image to 20KB tool
- Select your photo or scanned signature, or drop it onto the box. JPG, PNG, WebP and iPhone HEIC files all work.
- Check the target size. It is set to 20 KB; click another preset or type your own limit, for example 15 or 50.
- The tool finds the highest quality that stays under your limit. If quality alone is not enough, it reduces the pixel dimensions slightly too.
- Click Download. The new file name ends in -20kb.jpg so you can find it easily.
Why do forms ask for a 20KB photo?
Many online application systems for exams, jobs, scholarships and government services were designed to store millions of applicant photos cheaply. To keep their storage and page loads small, they set strict file size limits, commonly:
- Photograph: 20–50 KB
- Signature: 10–20 KB
- Thumb impression or other documents: 20–100 KB
A photo taken on a phone is usually 2–5 MB, which is 100 to 250 times too large. Uploading it gives an error such as “file size should be less than 20 KB”, and that is where this tool helps.
How this tool hits the target
Instead of guessing with a quality slider, the tool searches for the right setting for you:
- It first tries the highest quality and checks the size.
- If that is too big, it tests settings in between, halving the gap each time, until it finds the best quality that still fits.
- If even the lowest quality is too large, it shrinks the image dimensions a little and searches again.
This takes a second or two and gives you the sharpest image that fits under your limit, rather than one that is far smaller and blurrier than necessary.
Tips for a clear result at 20KB
- Crop first. Remove background, empty space and borders. Fewer pixels means more of the 20 KB goes to your face or signature.
- Use even lighting with a plain light background. Shadows and busy patterns take more space to store.
- For signatures, use black or dark blue ink on white paper. High contrast compresses extremely well.
- Check the requirements. If the form also specifies pixel dimensions (for example 3.5 × 4.5 cm or 200 × 230 px), resize to those before compressing. For an exam or visa photo with a fixed size in centimetres, the Passport Photo Maker crops to the right shape in one step.
Other common sizes
Use the presets above the upload box to switch to 10 KB, 50 KB, 100 KB or 200 KB, or type any number. The same method works for every limit.
Privacy
Photos of your face and your signature are sensitive. This tool runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, stored or seen by anyone else.
Frequently asked questions
Will the file be exactly 20KB?
It will be at or just under 20 KB, which is what upload forms check for. The tool aims for the closest size below your limit so the image stays as sharp as possible.
Why did the tool make my image smaller in pixels?
A large photo cannot always fit into 20 KB just by lowering quality. When that happens the tool reduces the width and height step by step until it fits. Most forms that ask for 20 KB also expect small dimensions, so this is normal.
My form also asks for specific dimensions, like 200×230 pixels. What should I do?
Crop or resize the photo to the required dimensions first, then use this tool to bring it under the size limit. The result shows the final width and height so you can check it.
Can I compress a signature to under 20KB?
Yes. Photograph or scan your signature on plain white paper, crop it closely, and upload it here. Signatures usually fit into 10–20 KB with very little visible change.
Is the output JPG? My form only accepts JPG/JPEG.
Yes. The output is always a standard JPG, which is the format almost every application portal accepts. JPG and JPEG are the same format.
Are my documents uploaded anywhere?
No. Your photo is processed by your own browser and never sent to any server. This matters for ID photos and signatures, which you should not hand to unknown websites.
