How to use the HEIC to JPG tool
- Select your HEIC photos or drop them onto the box. You can convert up to 20 at a time.
- Choose the output format. JPG works everywhere; choose PNG if you need lossless quality.
- Leave the quality at 90% for photos that look identical to the original, or lower it for smaller files.
- Download each JPG, or click Download all as ZIP.
Why convert HEIC to JPG?
Apple switched iPhones to HEIC because it saves storage. The catch is compatibility. You will typically run into problems when you:
- Open iPhone photos on Windows, which needs an extra paid extension for HEIC.
- Upload to websites and forms that accept only JPG or PNG, such as job portals, visa applications and many marketplaces.
- Share with Android users or older software, which may show a blank file or an error.
- Edit in older photo editors that do not recognise HEIC.
JPG is the most widely supported image format in the world, so converting removes all of those problems.
HEIC vs JPG at a glance
| HEIC | JPG | |
|---|---|---|
| File size | About 50% smaller | Larger |
| Compatibility | Apple devices, newer software | Everything |
| Transparency | Supported | Not supported |
| Best for | Storing photos on iPhone | Sharing, uploading, printing |
How the conversion works
The tool reads your HEIC file with libheif, the same open-source decoder used by many desktop apps, compiled to run in a web browser. It decodes the image to full-resolution pixels, applies the correct orientation, and saves a new JPG (or PNG) with the quality you chose. Because it all happens on your device, conversion is private and fast, with no upload limits.
Getting the best results
- Keep the quality at 85–95% for photos you want to print or edit.
- Pick 70–80% if you are emailing many photos and want smaller files.
- Choose PNG if you need a lossless copy for editing; expect large files.
- To send photos to a form with a size limit, convert here first, then use the Compress Image to 20KB tool.
Converting on Windows, Android and Mac
This page works in any modern browser: Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, on Windows, macOS, Android, iPhone and Chromebook. There is nothing to install. Bookmark it for next time you move photos off your iPhone. If the converted JPGs are still too big to email or upload, run them through Compress Image next.
Frequently asked questions
What is a HEIC file?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the photo format iPhones and iPads have used by default since iOS 11. It stores photos at about half the size of JPG with the same quality, but many Windows PCs, Android phones, websites and forms cannot open it.
Will I lose quality converting HEIC to JPG?
At 90% quality the JPG looks the same as the original to the eye. The JPG will usually be larger in file size than the HEIC, because JPG is a less efficient format. Full resolution is kept.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. The HEIC decoder runs inside your browser, so your photos never leave your device. The first conversion takes a moment longer because the browser loads the decoder once.
Does it keep the photo the right way up?
Yes. The rotation stored in the photo is applied, so portraits stay upright in the JPG.
How do I stop my iPhone saving photos as HEIC?
Open Settings, then Camera, then Formats, and choose Most Compatible. New photos will be saved as JPG. Photos you have already taken stay in HEIC, so convert those here.
Can I convert Live Photos?
The still image of a Live Photo is converted to JPG. The short video part is not included, since JPG cannot hold video.
